As I write this post, there are disruptions in English cities with rioting, arson and looting. Many local residents feel trapped in their own homes and under threat. The majority of the public are understandably asking for the police to act forcefully and combat the criminal element organizing the events.

The organizers, the ringleaders have something to draw upon that we should address. Most of those involved lack the inspiration messages that would give them direction in life. I am told this was the problem in the Mumbai terrorist attacks in 2008 – terrorist leaders manipulated a group of directionless young people.

Marilyn Devonish, herself a life coach and therapist who has worked with gang members in London, commented on the recent rioting in this way: “Imagine if the looters put the same gusto, motivation and ability to get organized and take action in their daily lives or building their community? The world would be a very different place.”

She is quite right. There are many stories of lost lives involving young people who have simply lost their dreams and hope but there are also stories of people who have broken free of deprivation to achieve a fulfilling life.

Perhaps we all need to come down hard on those malefactors who lead the leaderless into destructive situations but, at the same time, help those who have no direction to find their way to helping the community rather than finding thrown destruction in violence, drink and drugs.

We all need the inspiration messages to help us dream and follow those dreams but these rioters need hope more than most.

As Viktor Frankl observed:  “What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for some goal worthy of him. What he needs is not the discharge of tension at any cost, but the call of a potential meaning waiting to be fulfilled by him.”

How true.
