Imagine the place you work 20 years from now. Are they still in business? What is it like? What are the employees like? Does anybody know that you ever worked there? Did you make enough of an impact that people are still talking about it?
Many people are happy enough “just doing their job.” Yet I think that we are all capable of more. Over the span of my career, I have managed to leave long lasting positive marks at several places I have worked.
Just recently I worked part-time for a large nursing home chain in order to keep my nursing license current and make sure I didn’t lose touch with the changes in the industry. During my year of work, I was responsible for establishing or correcting three major policies and procedures that improved or expedited patient care. People may not be able to name the person that fought for the policies to be implemented, but it is an impact that will be noticeable in 20 years. I am okay with people not know who made the changes, because I know I made an impact.
At another company I worked for, I helped them change their shipping procedures and the primary shipping company they used. That move netted an annual savings of 1 million dollars, I imagine that very few people will remember who helped make those changes, but the owner of the company will likely never forget.
Although it may not be very important if all of the employees know who made the changes, it is important that as an employee you are engaged in making positive changes. So the best question to ask yourself may be… Is the place I am working at better, the same or worse because of me?
Be honest. Only one answer is acceptable. If you answered the same or worse there is still time to make a change. You don’t have to make the change to impress anybody or to even get a pay raise, sometimes you need to make the change just to keep yourself connected and engaged to what you do every day. If you answered the place you are working is better… Congratulations! Keep working. It may be possible that you will become one of the company’s greatest agents of change.
Leave your mark. Do it for your patients, your customers, your people & yourself. When you are part of positive change your work becomes exciting, you become exhilarated and when the time comes for you to move on you can do so knowing that you left your mark.
